MUSIC & MEMORYSM
Available at Serenades at Longwood, Serenades at The Villages and Serenades at West Orange
At Sonata’s Serenades Memory Care Assisted Living communities, we witness the amazing healing powers of music every day. Certain songs can calm anxieties, lift moods and rekindle special memories in all of us, even those with advanced dementia, and our residents benefit greatly from MUSIC & MEMORYSM, the evidence-based, international therapy program developed by Dan Cohen, MSW.
As official MUSIC & MEMORYSM certified organizations, Serenades communities’ certifications reassure families of Sonata’s commitment to person-centered care while giving residents access to the transformative, therapeutic benefits of customized playlists delivered via iPods and other personal devices.
Our dementia care teams love taking the time to get to know our residents as individuals, and one thing we’re always sure to ask is their favorite songs and types of music! That information gives us a good head start when selecting music for a playlist, but to become certified in the MUSIC & MEMORYSM program, our dementia care professionals also receive special training. MUSIC & MEMORYSM training teaches our staff about the program’s importance, benefits and best practices. This includes how to choose and order particular songs to create the ideal personalized playlist that will generate the maximum enjoyment for and elicit the desired responses from the individual for whom it’s created. No two playlists will ever be alike!
MUSIC & MEMORYSM was the subject of the award-winning documentary Alive Inside: A Story of Music and Memory.
